TAMPA – A Craigslist posting offered Nestor Ortez’s services as an air conditioning contractor, authorities said, and today he drove to a house off Nebraska Avenue prepared to install an AC unit.
But Ortez isn’t licensed, police said. He was one of four people ensnared by a sting operation that had undercover detectives posing as homeowners in order to put unlicensed AC contractors on ice.
Unlicensed contractors might charge less for roofing, plumbing or air conditioning work, Bartlett said, but they’re more likely to make mistakes that could cause injuries or damage.
