Letter to All ACE Heating & Cooling Customers:
Phase out of R-22 AC Refrigerant
I have been informed and understand that the refrigerant R-22 that operates my current cooling system is being phased out and will no longer be produced as of Dec of 2019 under section 608 of the Clean Air Act by order of Environmental Protection Agency. This law will dramatically decrease the production of R-22 until the phase out is complete.
I have also been informed that the decrease in production of R-22 will increase demands for this product while making it extremely difficult and costly to purchase.

This Document states that our representative has done just that with great care and concern. Tax Credits Are Available For 2013 And Retroactive To January 1, 2012
Your Air Conditioning System Purchase Could Get You Up To $500 In Federal Tax Credits
The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 passed in January 2013 retroactively extends tax credits for homeowners replacing heating and cooling equipment for their primary residence with qualifying, high-efficiency products. Tax credits, unlike deductions, are subtracted directly from your personal income tax liability. For example, if you complete your tax return and calculate that your tax liability is $2,000, a tax credit of $500 may reduce your tax liability to only $1,500. Be sure to check with your tax advisor to determine eligibility for and how to best take advantage of the tax credits.
Here’s How It Works
Product purchase must be for your principal residence and be “placed in service” between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013. According to the IRS “placed in service” means when the original installation of the product is completed. Continue reading

Angie’s List offers a great video with basics as to why AC maintenance is important.
Your heating and cooling system uses over 50 percent of your energy costs in your home. While changing the air filter is one of the simplest things you can do to keep your air conditioner working, a regular maintenance routine with an air conditioning professional will keep your unit from malfunctioning during the hottest days of the summer.
Angie Hicks, Angie’s List founder: “For a typical tuneup on your air conditioner it’s probably going to cost around $70 to $100. But also keep in mind, many companies do offer maintenance plans that might offer it at a little lower price by signing up for a whole year.”
Darren Skaggs, Airtron Heating and Air Conditioning: “It needs to be tuned up once a year every year. Also, if the outdoor coils are dirty, if the cooling capacity is not up to par and they are not getting air flow out things like that can show that the air conditioner needs to be tuned up. Going to the outdoor unit we check the indoor coil, the outdoor coil, the capacitors, compressor, do an all systems check on the electrical and make sure everything is tightened check the refrigerant level, the temperatures and make sure the system is efficient and operating as it should. It is true that you can lose up to 5% efficiency because if the system is not operating the way it’s supposed to such has dirty coil, over heated motors, lack of refrigerant effects how that system is efficient so as it goes through the year it can lose efficiency if it’s not tuned up properly.”
Angie’s List Tips:
A/C maintenance tips:
- Have your unit checked each year
- Costs can range from $70-$100
- Be wary of significantly lower prices
- Inspection checks coils, capacitors, compressor & refrigerant
- Up to 5% efficiency loss if unit is not maintained
When visiting a local store or calling for service, we all hope we are not getting taken to the cleaners. We would all hope that all local companies build their business on integrity and honesty. Unfortunately, in the competitive air conditioning industry, espeically here in Brandon, Florida, we sometimes find that ac companies are simply trying to make a quick buck on the backs of unsuspecting homeowners, many of which are elderly.
A recent Today Show report shows that this is not only a local problem. Either dishonesty or incompetence led several ac repairmen to quote high charges for a minor and easy fix.
It’s hot out there in the dog days of summer, but thanks to air conditioning, you’re sitting cool and pretty inside. Take a moment to appreciate the blessings of one of the greatest modern inventions. Celebrate air conditioning appreciation day by giving your AC unit a little love. Air Conditioning Appreciation is recognized July 3- August 15, and it’s the perfect time to fine-tune the cooling device that we all take for granted.
Where would we be without an air conditioner? Temperatures in Brandon, Florida are already soaring into the 90’s and summer has just begun. Just imagine how hot and humid it will be in the next month! Without an air conditioner, we’d have to spend our days at Wal-Mart, just to stay cool.
Lack of air conditioning during hot spells and heat waves is physically dangerous.
Air conditioning has become a necessity of life for those who can afford it. Heat stroke, heat rash, heat edema, heat cramps, dehydration, and heat exhaustion are all illnesses due to exposure to prolonged excessive heat and humidity.
Now, there are a few simple things you can do yourself to keep your air conditioner working well. Here are two air conditioner maintenance chores you can do on your own:
- Change your filter. Your air conditioner filter should be changed each month. A filter that is clogged with dirt will make your air conditioner run poorly. It will also run up your electric bill.
- Clean your filter. In between the time you change your filter, you can clean it to keep it working efficiently. Use a vacuum attachment to vacuum out excess dirt, or take it outside and shake it off.
In order for your air conditioning unit to work at it’s peak, it should be regularly maintenanced by a qualified technician. In the Brandon, FL area, contact the HVAC specialists at:

Make no mistake, it’s getting warmer in Brandon, Florida. Our seasons usually go from winter straight into summer-type heat and this year is no exception. With highs in the 90’s this week, there is no doubt you will be running your air conditioning unit all day and night to stay comfortable. Comfort is one thing, but it certainly comes at a price. Rising temperatures means a spike in your energy costs, and with gas at almost $4.00 a gallon, we all need to find ways to cut back on our spending. Here are few ways to cut costs on your air conditioning bill:
- Change your air filter. One of the simplest and most cost effective ways to save some money on a/c costs is to change your air conditioning filter monthly. Dust and debris builds up in your ac filter, forcing your air conditioning unit to work harder. If you replace it on a regular basis, your energy costs will decrease.
- Add a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat will deliver savings without sacrificing comfort. You can regulate your home’s temperature by setting the thermostat a few degrees warmer while you are at work, then setting it to cool down before you get home. There are some great models on the market including The Nest, which we are certified in installing.
- Tune-up your air conditioning unit. Routine maintenance on your home’s hardest-working appliance is a necessity here in Brandon, FL. In addition to changing your filter, a licensed AC tech will clean unit parts that are best left to the professionals. To keep your Brandon ac unit in tip-top shape, it is recommended that you tune-up your air conditioner twice a year.
- Keep your blinds or curtains closed. Using window blinds or shades can block up to 65 per cent of the heat that would otherwise come in through your windows. If you are not in need of light in a particular room, or at certain times, this little tip will certainly save you money on your cooling costs.
- Replace your old air conditioning unit. If your unit is over 10 years old, it may be time to think about replacing it. Replacing an older unit with an Energy Star qualified model could cut cooling costs by 30 percent.
Two Common Central Air Conditioning Problems
The refrigerant in the system may be low from a possible leak. The leak should be located, repaired, and recharged.
Compressor failure is a problem, which usually requires replacement of the unit. Usually when a compressor is replaced, the entire condensing unit on the exterior is replaced. The typical life expectancy of a compressor in a central air conditioning system is 8 to15 years, depending on geographic location.
This question is asked by many of our customers during our hot Brandon, Florida summer months.
The following guidelines will help you make an informed decision as to which is best for your family:
If your AC is 5 Years Old or Newer: In most cases the best advice is to simply fix the unit. Nearly all manufacturers provide a 5 to 10-year warranty on the compressor and other parts. Some also provide a 5 or 10-year warranty on the air conditioning condenser and evaporator coils. If you are not sure if you have a valid warranty just call ACE Heating & Cooling (Brandon, FL) and our technicians will diagnose your problem and then contact the manufacturer to determine if your air conditioning system condenser is still under warranty for any particular part, it’s that simple.
Air Conditioning Systems over 5 years of age: When the air conditioning system compressor fails and the compressor is out of warranty we suggest replacing the entire air conditioning unit. Typically units over this age did not come with a 10 year warranty on the compressor as those types of warranties started just a few years ago.
ACE Heating & Cooling technicians will diagnose your system and contact the manufacturer to determine if any warranty is still available. Keep in mind that the replacement compressor for your air conditioner will typically only carry a 1-year warranty and the cost of the replacement compressor for your air conditioning system is normally at least ½ to ¾ the cost of a brand new air conditioning condenser unit.
Many of the other parts, other than the coils, that fail on your air conditioner are usually low enough in cost to warrant a repair instead of replacing the unit at this age.
Air Conditioning Systems over 8 year of age: Unless the part is less than $200.00 we suggest considering replacing the air conditioning unit. At this age the air conditioning condenser system may continue to be prone to more failures and with increased efficiency of the latest air conditioning systems you could save hundreds off your utility bill.
Air Conditioning Systems over 12 year of age: We suggest considering replacing the air conditioning condenser unit, typically you can expect to save up to 50% in operating costs simply by increasing the efficiency rating of your air conditioning condenser unit with a new indoor evaporator coil. Newer air conditioning systems that are available today are much more efficient and economical to operate than those manufactured 10 years ago.
Other air conditioner considerations: If the air conditioner condenser fan motor fails and the system continues to run unnoticed, it is highly likely that there is hidden damage present. Your air conditioning system compressor depends on the air conditioning system condenser fan to remove the heat from the condenser unit and when the fan fails it puts a huge amount of heat, wear and tear on the compressor. The air conditioning compressor is similar to your car engine; overheating can damage both.
